For years now, AMD has been playing catch-up to Intel for a lot more reasons than one, but AMD is working on gaining against Intel with their new mobile chips. Here are the 10 new features about the new AMD chips.
.) Double the CPU power: This launch marks the first time AMD will have more than two processor cores in a laptop. They'll be branded as Phenom II processors.
.) Better speed and battery life: There are significant speed and battery life improvements with AMD's new chips, which not only include Phenom II, but updates to the Turion and Athlon brands as well.
.) Power in a small(er) package: AMD Phenom II processors (Triple and Quad Core) will be found in laptops with screen sizes as small as 13-inches.
.) DDR3 memory's here: The platform moves from DDR2 to DDR3 memory, and configurations can go beyond 4 Gbytes depending on how many DIMM slots PC manufacturers decide to use in their laptops.
.) HyperTransport 3: The technology behind AMD's integrated memory controller speeds up to 1.6GHz (from 800 MHz).
.) No TurboCore: TurboCore, which is the equivalent to Intel's TurboBoost technology, is not available on the mobile Phenoms.
.) New labels: Four tiers, based on what users do in a typical day, will correspond to AMD's "Vision" strategy. So you'll see AMD stickers with the terms "Vision Basic," "Vision Premium," "Vision Ultimate," and "Vision Black" in place of processor model and frequency numbers.
.) Unlocked quad-core CPUs: "Vision Black" systems have unlocked Phenom II X4 quad-core processors, meaning gamers can overclock to their heart's content.
.) Longer battery life:Phenom II X4s can be paired with an ATI's integrated graphics and last for over 6 hours on a single charge, according to AMD.
.) See them everywhere: The new AMD processors will appear in 135 laptops this year—26 of them ultrathins. Household names like HP, Lenovo, Acer, and Toshiba will have AMD quad-core laptops on store shelves as early as June 2010.
