The Race To Topple King iPad

The iPad's success with millions already sold and many stores running out of stock in just a few mere months has had major PC manufacturers looking like wannabes.

With the initial success of Apple's iPad and the standard set so high, it's going to be a long climb before anyone can challenge the king of the hill.

Let's take a quick loot at the potential challengers to the Apple iPad.

HP Slate / PalmPad

Details of of the HP Slate leaked on the Internet (a few months back) featuring a 8.9-inch touchscreen, front and back cameras, and running on Windows 7. With the acquisition of Palm the HP Slate could sprout another version and may be called PalmPad.

Dell Streak

The Dell Streak is described as a tablet, but with only a 5-inch screen, it should be considered a smartphone.

The Dell Streak hasn't been recieved well by many. Users complained because, unlike the larger iPAD, the screen was too small for full miltimedia use. Dell also released the Streak with the old Android 1.6 OS and when they did make an update, some key features were lost enraging some of its users.

The BlackPad Playbook

Although not officially announced, there have been rumours that the 'BlackPad' will have the same dimensions as the iPad, front and back cameras, and will include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth that will allow users to connect to the Internet through their Blackberry phones.

RIM hopes to capitalise on its strengths and popularity among business communities.

Samsung Galaxy Tab

The Samsung Galaxy Tab was introduced during last week's IFA technology fair in Berlin.

The Galaxy Tab, running on the latest version of Google's Android OS, is being touted as the main competition to Apple's iPad. Samsung introduced significant features on its tablet that were missing on Apple's iPad like Adobe Flash compatibility and the ability to make phone calls. Plus, the Samsung Galaxy Tab is expected to cost less than the iPad.

Now, what if they could upgrade the chip to the new Orion 1GHZ dual-core ARM processor onto the Galaxy Tab prior to releasing? *Drool*

Toshiba Folio

The Toshiba Folio was also introduced during the IFA tech fair but many people found the device mediocre.

The Folio 100 features a 10.1 inch display which supports a resolution of 1024 x 600 and comes with a SIM card slot for 3G network access, but comes with a sloppy 1.3MP font camera.

It runs a customized Android 2.2 OS but has no access to the Android Market.

Which of these devices do you think will be the best rival of the Apple iPad?
