Adium – Adium is a popular free instant messaging client for Mac OS X that supports multiple IM networks, including MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk, AIM, ICQ and Jabber. It supports many protocols through the libraries libezv (for Bonjour), MGTwitterEngine (for Twitter), and libpurple (for all other protocols).
AppTrap – Although much better at the installation of applications than is Windows, OSX sometimesstill leaves some files lying around when you just drag the application to the trash can. AppTrap automatically detects when you’re deleting an application, looks for associated files, and automatically deletes them for you along with the app in question.
Audacity – Audacity is a digital audio editor and recording application. Audacity is cross-platform and is available for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and BSD.
Bean – Bean is a small, easy-to-use word processor (or more precisely, a rich text editor), designed to make writing convenient, efficient and comfortable. ClamXav – Clam AntiVirus (ClamAV) is a free, cross-platform antivirus software tool-kit capable of detecting many types of malicious software, including viruses. One of its main uses is on mail servers as a server-side email virus scanner. CoconutBattery – CoconutBattery isn’t just a tool which shows you only the current charge of your battery – it also shows you the current maximum capacity of it in relation to the original capacity your battery had as it left the factory. You also get information about the battery-loadcycles (how often did you fully load your battery), the current charger (coconutBattery even warns you if you plugged in a wrong charger for your Notebook) and last but not least information about the age of your Mac.
Colloquy – Traditionally, chat clients on the Mac have been anything but glamorous. Colloquy is an advanced IRC, SILC & ICB client which aims to fill this void. By adhering to Mac OS X interface conventions, Colloquy has the look and feel of a quality Mac application.
Cyberduck – Cyberduck is a graphical open source FTP and SFTP client for Mac OS X licensed under the GPL. It supports FTP/TLS (FTP secured over SSL/TLS), using AUTH TLS as well as uploading and downloading by drag and drop and is able to synchronise files and directories. In addition, it is also able to open some files in external text editors. Cyberduck includes a bookmark manager and supports the Mac OS X Keychain and Bonjour networking.
DAZ Studio – DAZ Studio is a 3D figure illustration/animation application released by DAZ 3D Inc. It is compatible with most files intended for use by Poser. Unlike most 3D software, where 3D objects are usually created from scratch, DAZ Studio is designed to allow users to manipulate “ready to use” models and figures. It is aimed at users who are interested in posing human figures for illustrations and animation, but who may be daunted by more technical 3D and CAD software.
Dropbox – Dropbox is a storage application and service operated by Evenflow, Inc. The service enables users to store and sync files online and between computers. Dropbox has a cross-platform client (Windows, Mac and Linux) that enables users to drop any file into a Dropbox folder that is then synced to the web and the users’ other computers with the Dropbox client. Files in the Dropbox folder may then be shared with other Dropbox users or accessed from the web. Users may also upload files manually through a web browser.
Firefox – Mozilla Firefox is a free and open source web browser descended from the Mozilla Application Suite and managed by Mozilla Corporation. Firefox had 22.51% of the recorded usage share of web browsers as of May 2009[update], making it the second most popular browser in terms of current use worldwide, after Internet Explorer.
Flip4Mac WMV – Flip4Mac WMV Components allow you to import, export and play Windows Media video and audio files on your Mac. Flip4Mac WMV plug-ins can be used with most QuickTime based applications, including QuickTime Player, iMovie ‘06**, Final Cut Pro and more.
GIMP – The most popular of all free photo editing software, GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program, and is highly-supported and frequently updated. Comparative to Photoshop, users can perform basic tasks such as photo retouching, color correction, and image size, or more complicated tasks like image composition and creation. GIMP has a scripting interface for advance users, as well as plugins, extensions, and filters.
Google SketchUp – Different from a normal vector graphics program, Google’s SketchUp allows you to not only create a design, but view it in 3D. It is easier to use than more complicated 3D software, such as AutoCAD, and is free.
Handbrake – HandBrake is a software application that can convert MPEG video (including DVD-Video) into a MPEG-4 video file in .mp4, .avi, .ogm, or .mkv containers. The program is used by many people to convert DVDs into other forms so they can be viewed on iPods, iPhones and with the Mac QuickTime Player.
Image Tricks – Image tricks is a freeware application for editing your photos and images using Mac OS X Core Image filters that transform your photos and apply advanced visual effects. This program also contains a powerful image generator for creating unique backgrounds and abstract images for business cards, web design, print materials and more.
Inkspace – An Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator, CorelDraw, or Xara X, using the W3C standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format. Inkscape supports many advanced SVG features (markers, clones, alpha blending, etc.) and great care is taken in designing a streamlined interface. It is very easy to edit nodes, perform complex path operations, trace bitmaps and much more. We also aim to maintain a thriving user and developer community by using open, community-oriented development.
iStumbler – iStumbler is the leading wireless discovery tool for Mac OS X, providing plugins for finding AirPort networks, Bluetooth devices and Bonjour services with your Mac. Release 98 includes a re-written AirPort plugin which now correctly reports signal for all current AirPort chip-sets, and provides more information about all networks. The info window is now resizable and the AirPort Inspector shows dBm values when available.
iTunes – ITunes is a proprietary digital media player application, used for playing and organizing digital music and video files. The program is also an interface to manage the contents on Apple’s popular iPod digital media players as well as the iPhone. Additionally, iTunes can connect to the iTunes Store via the Internet to purchase and download music, music videos, television shows, applications, iPod games, audiobooks, various podcasts, feature length films and movie rentals (not available in all countries), and ringtones (available only in the USA). It is also used to download applications for the iPhone and iPod touch as long as they are running iPhone OS 2.0 or later.
Mozy – Mozy is an online backup tool that allows both Windows and Mac users to back up their data to an off-site server. With the free version of Mozy, a user can back up as much as 2 GB of data from up to two computers (referring others to Mozy gives free users an additional 0.25 GB of storage space). The paid version allows unlimited backups from one computer. Mozy has the ability to back up several types of files such as bookmarks, documents, and e-mails at once rather than forcing the user to select particular files or folders.
Nvu – Nvu was created as an open source web authoring platform from the people that brought you Linspire. Nvu’s broad feature set makes it a viable replacement for expensive alternative web authoring systems such as Microsoft Frontpage and Macromedia (now Adobe) Dreamweaver. Nvu was created with the beginner in mind and is regarded as one of the best solutions for amateur coders. Users can readily switch between WYSIWYG and code views and manage their content with a tabbed interface. Nvu also features integrated file management via FTP. Simply login to your website and edit files on the fly, directly from your site.
OnyX – OnyX is a maintenance and optimization tool for OS X. Use OnyX to fix permissions and clean the computer cache at least once a month. OnyX does its magic deep in the inner realms of the Mac System, so be careful with selection options.
Perian – Perian is an open source plug-in which enables QuickTime to play several popular video formats not supported natively by QuickTime on Mac OS X. It is largely based on the FFmpeg project, as it uses libavcodec and libavformat.
Pixelmator – Pixelmator is a beautifully designed, easy-to-use, fast and powerful image editor for Mac OS X. It has prertty much everything you need to create, edit and enhance your images.
Postbox – Postbox offers powerful new ways to find, use, and view email messages and content, organize your work life, and get stuff done. Postbox works behind the scenes to catalog everything in your email. We mean everything: every bit of text, every contact, address and link. Every picture, document and attachment. It’s all in the catalog and it’s all searchable. Just click the Images tab to see a thumbnail gallery of every picture from every message, or the Attachments tab to browse through documents, files and more. And since Postbox does all of its cataloging on your own computer, the privacy and confidentiality of your email information is preserved.
Quicksilver – Quicksilver is a computer utility software program for Mac OS X, made by Blacktree Software and distributed freely. It is essentially a graphical shell for the OS X operating system aimed at increasing user efficiency. It allows users to use the keyboard to rapidly perform tasks such as launching applications, manipulating files and data, running scripts, or sending e-mail; all typical specialties of a shell.
Seashore – Seashore is an open source image editor for Mac OS X’s Cocoa framework. It features gradients, textures and anti-aliasing for both text and brush strokes. It supports multiple layers and alpha channel editing. It is based around the GIMP’s technology and uses the same native file format.
Sidenote – Sidenote resides in drawer on the side of your desktop, can be pulled open momentarily (with the mouse or a hotkey); it then slides back out of view when you’re done. Like TextEdit, it allows for a nice variety of text formatting, and unlike TextEdit, it saves in a repository rather than a file.
Skitch – Skitch makes it so easy to capture, size, crop and annotate images. You no longer need to load the GIMP to do simple image edits. When you the free storage and sharing capabilities from the Skitch online service, you have an excellent photo-editing and sharing combination.
Skype – Skype is software that enables the world’s conversations. Millions of individuals and businesses use Skype to make free video and voice calls, send instant messages and share files with other Skype users. Everyday, people everywhere also use Skype to make low-cost calls to landlines and mobiles.
Smultron – Smultron is an open source text editor for Mac OS X that is designed for both beginning and advanced users. It is notable for its breadth of syntax highlighting and text encoding support, and also for its different approach towards column view and multiple tabbing.
StuffIt Expander – StuffIt is a family of computer software utilities for archiving and compressing files on the Macintosh and Microsoft Windows platforms: it was originally produced for the Macintosh. Stuffit will handle virtually every file compression format.
TextWrangler 2 – TextWrangler is a popular text editor for Mac OS X from Bare Bones Software. It was originally a commercial product, but (beginning with version 2.0) has become the freeware alternative to their flagship editor, BBEdit, and the successor to their previous freeware editor, BBEdit Lite.
Transmission – Transmission is a full-feature BitTorrent client, using a simple interface on top of a cross-platform back-end. It is also the most popular torrent client for OS X.
Tweetdeck – TweetDeck is an Adobe AIR desktop Twitter application. Like other Twitter applications it interfaces with the Twitter API to allow users to send and receive tweets and view profiles. It is the most popular Twitter application, with a 19% market share as of June 2009, following only the official Twitter.com website for posting new status updates.
Unarchiver – The Unarchiver is a free data decompression frontend of libxad, which supports more formats than Archive Utility (formerly known as BOMArchiveHelper), the built-in archive unpacker program in Mac OS X. It can also handle filenames in foreign character sets, created with non-English versions of other operating systems.
VirtualBox – VirtualBox is an x86 virtualization software package, originally created by German software company innotek, now developed by Sun Microsystems as part of its Sun xVM virtualization platform. It is installed on an existing host operating system; within this application, additional operating systems, each known as a Guest OS, can be loaded and run, each with its own virtual environment.
VLC – VLC media player is an open source, free software media player written by the VideoLAN project. VLC is a portable multimedia player, encoder, and streamer supporting many audio and video codecs and file formats as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It is able to stream over networks and to transcode multimedia files and save them into various formats.
